Time blindness: why you're late when you left early
You left the house with twenty minutes to spare and arrived ten minutes late. You "just quickly" checked one thing and lost ninety minutes. You know an appointment is Thursday and it still ambushes you on Thursday. None of this is carelessness. Your internal clock is a broken instrument, and you've been navigating by it.
Only two times exist: now and not now
The most useful description of ADHD time perception is that the brain files everything into one of two folders. There is now — vivid, urgent, real. And there is not now — a flat, undifferentiated fog in which tomorrow and next March are roughly the same distance away.
This explains behaviour that looks irrational from the outside:
- A deadline three weeks out generates no urgency at all, then generates total urgency at 11pm the night before — because that's the moment it crossed from "not now" into "now."
- Anything not physically visible ceases to exist. The bill in the drawer isn't being ignored; it is, functionally, gone.
- You can hyperfocus for four hours and genuinely experience it as forty minutes.
Why "leaving" takes forty minutes
Here's the specific mechanism behind being late despite good intentions. You correctly estimate the drive: 25 minutes. What you price at zero is the departure sequence — the keys, the shoes, the wallet, the phone that's charging in another room, the cat, the window, the thing you suddenly remember.
That sequence is invisible to time-blind estimation, and it routinely takes twenty minutes. So you budget 25 and need 45, every single time, and every single time you're surprised.
The fix is embarrassingly simple: time it once. Actually stopwatch yourself from "deciding to leave" to "engine on." Whatever that number is, that's your real departure cost. Write it on a card by the door. Stop negotiating with it.
Make time visible
Digital clocks are a terrible instrument for a time-blind brain, because 3:47 is a fact, not a feeling — it tells you what time it is but nothing about how much is left. What works is anything that shows time as a shrinking physical quantity:
- A visual countdown timer (the kind with a red disc that visibly disappears). You can see time draining without doing a calculation.
- An analogue clock in the rooms where you lose time — bathroom, kitchen, desk. The moving hand does the work your brain won't.
- A timer you can see without checking. If you have to pick up your phone to check the time, you have just entered the phone, and the phone eats everything.
Make time audible
An alarm that goes off at the moment you need to leave is nearly useless, because you cannot instantly stop what you're doing. Transitions have a cost, and the alarm ignores it.
Set a five-minute warning instead — one alarm before the event, so the brain gets a runway to land on. Then a second alarm at the actual moment. The warning is the one that does the work; it converts an abrupt switch into a planned one.
The same applies to enjoyable things. A warning alarm before the end of a video-game session prevents the "just one more" spiral far more reliably than an alarm at the end of it.
Measure, don't estimate
Ask yourself how long it takes to unload the dishwasher and you'll say "ages." Time it and it's four minutes. Ask how long an email takes and you'll say "a minute" — it takes twenty. Time-blind estimation isn't just imprecise; it's wrong in both directions, which makes planning impossible.
So build a small library of real numbers. Time the ten tasks you do most and write the true figures down. Then plan from the written numbers, never from your felt sense — because the felt sense is the broken instrument, and you already know it lies.
This is why every good ADHD planner prints a time estimate next to each task. It isn't decoration. It's a prosthetic clock.
The hyperfocus problem
Hyperfocus is the other face of time blindness, and it's the one that makes you miss dinner. You cannot rely on noticing that hours have passed, because not noticing is precisely the condition. The only reliable interventions are external and physical:
- An alarm in a different room, so switching it off requires standing up.
- A hard stop attached to something real — a meeting, a person arriving, a meal someone else is expecting you at.
- Working in front of a visible countdown, so the draining is in your peripheral vision the whole time.
